Vibrant Shot Video on Blend Modes

I really liked this video from Vibrant Shot about blend modes, what exactly they do, why they’re grouped how they are, and different things you can accomplish with them. It’s always good to get a deeper understanding of why things are behaving they way they are in Photoshop, and every now and then you’ll pick up something that you can make a part of your daily workflow.

New Color Technique

I was doing a lighting test the other day, and came across this setup, which I really liked. It’s basically a custom White Balance that shifts things to a very pink/blue/brown place. It has a sort of an old-masters quality to it, which I’ve never been able to replicate before. There’s a subtlety to it that I’m digging. If you’ve got some gels and some strobes, give it a shot. Gel your lights and see what happens. Sometimes it’s a mess, but every now and then you’ll hit gold.

This is a recent picture from my collaboration with Marie, who is an amazing model/make up/hair artist. I had been impressed with the digital illustrations of an artist named Serge Birault who mostly does pinup-ish images of girls wearing latex and I wanted to incorporate kind of the same idea into one of my pictures. So I reached out to Marie, who definitely has the right look for the part, and sent her this sketch of my idea:

She was interesting in working together, so we met up and made a picture together. This picture was captured using four different plates and assembled in photoshop. I think we were definitely successful at getting the whole girl-emerging-from-oil look, and from my point of view 90% of that is thanks to Marie’s great makeup, styling and hair design. Seriously, she’s great and took my pictures to a whole new level.

Missing Model Idea

 

I was looking at a photographer’s portfolio the other day, and I came across a page where the photographer had paired up two images that went together. I think it was a close up of a model’s hair, and a shot of some trees. So the hair was messy and kinda had the same shape as the trees a little bit… you’ve probably seen that kind of thing before. Two images that kinda sorta go together because they both have blue in them, or they both are a little bit about loneliness or some other common theme.

Anyways, seeing that made me think of shooting images with the intention of pairing them up. And my first thought was this sketch. Shoot a model in profile against a simple background, and then use that image to arrange environmental elements into the same shape, leaving the space where the model’s head was empty.  Put the two images together and you wind up with a piece about how when someone goes away there is almost an empty space where they were before. Something is missing from the frame, even though it’s not obvious at first what it is.

It’s a decent idea, I’ll probably put it together sometime this summer. So look forward to that.
