day 314 - half and half

not technically well lit, but i like the contrast across the face.

setup shot:

day 313 - hard and melancholy

got a hard light above and behind, a soft light above and in front, and a reflector in front and below. and that's about it.

setup shot:

day 312 - look up

i wanted to attempt some above-softly-lit stuff, so i threw together this. did a floor skip off the hard wood for some color contrast-shadow detail, and that's about it. i like it quite a bit, but the head angle is an area of non-compromise. even looking straight ahead means the hat brim will prevent light from getting onto my face, and that's a lot of what makes this picture good.

setup shot:

day 311 - on white

this is probably my first serious attempt at shooting on a white with no detail background. i did some photoshop processing on it, in the original picture there was a lot of objects around me in the frame. so i cropped close to myself, and then expanded the canvas size in photoshop. the result is that it appears as if i was in a large empty room, but i was actually in my smallish crowded living room instead.

setup shot:

day 310 - hard above

just the typical.

setup shot:

day 309 - blued

no setup shot for this one, it's just a muted blue hard light camera left and a bit soft umbrella camera right. simple and to the point.

day 308 - soft rimmed

soft on one side, hard the other.

setup shot:

day 307 - strong up

this one has a strong uplight coming off the trigrip with a silver/gold cover on it. the silver/gold makes a very specular light source, it comes off very contrasty, but i think that's what i liked about this picture.

setup shot:

day 306 - pseudo noir

i thought this reminded me of a film noir type thing, so i adjusted it up using some cross processing to accentuate the feel. i dig it.

day 305 - going warm

it's weird, contrast is so key. if you gel all your lights cto.... then it just looks like an orange filter applied in photoshop. so what you have to do is leave one flash daylight balanced, or gel it blue or some other color. it just makes more visual sense when there's a contrasting element. not to say you can't make a compelling monochrome picture, it's just that i think a color contrast solution is way more interesting.

setup shot:

day 304 -

not too different from 303, just added a light for the background to get that gradient workin'.

setup shot:

day 303 - up blue

went back to my color contrast roots on this one.... got a gold gel on the main light, and a blue gel on the down low uplight. it's amazing how great color contrasts like this work. i think i need to explore other color contrasts than the usual blue/orange mix i've been pimping.

setup shot:

day 302 - super desat guy

this is from the same session as 301..... i just moved the light to directly behind my head and turned the power up a bit. did some desaturation in lightroom, and that's it. i usually stay away from heavy desat, since it became such an easy trendy thing to do, but i really think it compliments this portrait well.

setup shot:

day 301 - ray ish

for this shot i wanted to set up a super hard light that would rim out a profile, sortof like man ray style, but all in the camera. i've been thinking more and more about how to integrate graphic design type elements into photos, without resorting to photoshop. it's a bit of an interesting challenge.

day 300 - camouflage

setup shot without informational labels:

day 299 - double down

two diffusers. double the awesomeness.

setup shot:

day 298 - dark side of the face

i'm liking this style of light a lot more lately. it's sorta a light-around-the-subject thing, less big strong light. nicely indirect.

setup shot:

day 297 - el tinto

be-purpled.

setup shot:

day 296 - looking down my nose

at you.

setup shot:

day 295 - pensive

if i ever shot aesop rock, this would be how i would want the picture to come out. it has a very aesop rock feel to it.

setup shot:

day 294 - fabulous

yep, mixing it up with one of alisia's scarves. i think i look good in it.

setup shot:

day 293 - shadowy reflectory

trying to smile, for a change.

setup shot:

day 292 - obey

just a close up short depth of field shot of my sweatshirt. i thought it would look cool.... shirt in focus, my head a blur up there in the background.

and doesn't my torso look like 12 feet long in the setup shot? weird.

day 291 - two dogs

our dog plays with the neighbor's dog a lot. they're pretty much best friends at this point. anyways, our neighbor asked me if i could take a picture of the two of them sometime. i think she meant a snapshot or something like that, but i took it in another direction and did a studio-ish portrait thing. and this is it.

i shot each one separately, since there's no way either one would hold still if the other was around. so the camera's on a tripod, there's a 40" softbox camera right, and a honl gridded sb-28 camera left doing that gradient on the background.

drop both pictures into photoshop, mask out critical areas, and there it is. two dogs.

day 290 - shadow side

was working a variation of day 289, with an added blue slash light, then decided to turn it on it's ear. set up some backlighting with the softbox, and the reflector for fill. blue slash still in effect, and that's it. always cool to shoot the dark side of the face.

setup shot:

day 289 - zombie apocalypse

wanted to light with a lot of reflection coming up from below. stuck my hands out to see how much was coming up, and liked the shot, so i kept it.
