Behind the Scenes from Yesterday

Tim Lewis Photography Portrait Silhouette Intentional Misfire Silhouette

Working yesterday with a mixture of Strobe and Continuous Lighting, and took a moment to see what turning off the key light would look like. Got a kinda cool Silhouette with streaked light effect, so went with it. This is from a project I’m working on that’s going to be pretty interesting when it’s done. I’m excited to share it in the coming weeks.

Marie - Accidental Blade Runner Homage

Tim Lewis Photography Portrait Eugene Oregon Copyright 2014 * All Rights Reserved Tim Lewis Photography

One of the last shots from a shoot on Wednesday, this picture is the result of a great collaboration with model Marie Newell, a very talented Hair and Makeup Artist here in Eugene. At the very end of a long shoot, we decided last minute to set up and do a quick headshot. I grabbed a incandescent light for rim, and the first speedlight I had (which had a blue gel on it) for accent light, and this is the result. I had no idea at the time that we were recreating Sean Young’s look from Blade Runner…. but that was probably more to Marie’s credit than mine.

I’m really happy with how this shot came out, and I’m looking forward to sharing more soon!

Joel Grimes Video on Rembrandt Lighting

Joel Grimes is one of my favorite photographers. Here he is demonstrating how to create the classic “Rembrandt” style of light (examples here) on your subject. This is one of those styles that looks great on certain people, but not on others. Still, it’s an important style to master, and for a long time was standard practices for CEO type portraits. When it works it really works well, and Joel does a great job of demonstrating how to achieve it here. Enjoy!

How to use a Beauty Dish by Lindsay Adler

Good Tutorial on how to use a Beauty Dish for different effects in the studio. Lindsay Adler demonstrates how to achieve several different looks with just one light, and gives a few tips on some problems you might want to avoid while using a Beauty Dish.

The coolest cell phone competition idea

Tim Lewis Photography Idea

I had this idea sitting in a Starbucks, watching person after person come in and sit down to play with their smartphone. At first the idea was just something as crazy as someone using their cell phone as a phone, but then I remembered this picture of Lenny Kravitz talking on his cell phone with custom ear piece, and I thought it would be much more interesting to go completely anachronistic and have someone in a public space talking on a piece of antiquated comm technology. And so this sketch was born.

Man, that earpiece is stupid.

Recent Couple Shot

A quick post of a recent shot I did…. I was hired for a professional headshot, and talked them into a quick couples shot on one of the sets. I’ve got to say, there’s something to be said for having more than one person in your frame. Suddenly there’s an interaction going on, you get a sense of what they think about each other, and there’s multiple levels happening at the same time. Not a lot of processing in this one, just a black and white conversion and then some dodging and burning here and there. Fun quick shot of a very photogenic couple of people. I like it.
